Abstract Blockchain to Shut Down in December as Consumer Push Stalls

Igloo Inc., the company behind Pudgy Penguins, announced that its Abstract blockchain will stop running on December 15, 2026, after growth stalled. Users have about 10 weeks to bridge funds off the network, and Igloo says it'll put its resources back into Pudgy Penguins and the PENGU token.

Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network created by Igloo Inc., the company behind Pudgy Penguins, announced on October 6, 2026 that it will shut down on December 15. In a post on X, the team said growth had stalled and that a blockchain focused only on consumer crypto had proven unsustainable as a standalone business. Users were told to move their assets off the chain before the deadline.

Historical news event: 2026-10-06. Retrospective report prepared November 2026.

The decision is a sharp reversal for a network that went live in January 2025 with the goal of making crypto apps feel as simple as mainstream ones, using games, entertainment and well-known brands to draw people in.

Why Igloo is closing Abstract

According to The Block, Abstract pointed to stagnant growth, thin liquidity, a restricted decentralised finance (DeFi) ecosystem and limited interest from institutions. The team said "the industry has evolved considerably since Abstract was first conceived."

Igloo CEO Luca Netz said in a post on X that the company had funded Abstract for about 18 months and lost tens of millions of dollars. Igloo had raised more than $11 million in July 2024 in a round led by Founders Fund to build the network.

Netz also explained why Igloo didn't launch a token to keep the chain going, a common move for struggling networks. "A token only works if there is something driving demand to it," he wrote, as quoted by The Block on October 6. He added that "the only regret I have is not being able to celebrate a win alongside the Abstract community."

CoinDesk reported that Netz said Igloo "could no longer justify taking from the Pudgy Penguins business." Igloo said it will now focus on Pudgy Penguins, its NFTs and the PENGU token it launched on Solana in 2024.

What Abstract built

Abstract ran on ZKsync's ZK Stack technology and offered the Abstract Global Wallet, which let people sign in without managing a traditional seed phrase. Its portal grouped apps, games, trading and live streams in one place, and gave users rewards for trying them.

The network had real activity. The Block reported that more than 144 apps were deployed and more than 400,000 users were onboarded through partnerships with brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney. Disney characters came to the chain through Cryptoys in late 2025. CoinDesk, citing Abstract's own figures, reported more than 325 million transactions, $6 billion in decentralised exchange trading and more than $40 million in app revenue.

Activity on that scale didn't add up to a sustainable business for the chain itself. CoinDesk, citing DefiLlama data, reported that Abstract collected about $3,900 in chain fees over one recent 24-hour period. About $76 million in assets were still bridged to the network when the shutdown was announced.

What users need to do before December 15

A blockchain shutting down isn't like a website going offline. Assets left on a chain that stops processing transactions can become unreachable. Abstract's official Migration Hub says users can bridge funds off through the hub or the native Abstract bridge, and lists third-party bridges as alternatives. "Any users that do not migrate their assets by this date will lose access to their funds," the page says.

Abstract also warned about fake migration sites and impersonators, which tend to appear around any deadline involving user funds. Users should only follow migration links published on Abstract's official channels.

Some users criticised the 10-week window as too short, and others said the migration terms included a class action waiver, Protos reported. Cryptomorrow hasn't independently reviewed those terms.

As of this report, the shutdown is scheduled for December 15, 2026. The chain hasn't closed yet.

A business failure, not a rug pull

A planned, public wind-down with a migration period is different from a rug pull, in which insiders take user funds or deliberately mislead holders. None of the reporting on Abstract's closure points to fraud. The reasons given were financial and strategic.

It's also important not to confuse Abstract with every Pudgy Penguins product. The penguin NFTs, the toy line and the PENGU token don't depend on Abstract to exist. Other Igloo projects have had a harder time, though: Pudgy Party, the mobile game made with Mythical Games, closed earlier in 2026.

Abstract's announcement came days after another Ethereum layer 2, Blast, said on October 2 that it would shut down, which made Abstract the second layer 2 to announce a closure that week, CoinDesk noted. Blast had launched in 2023 with a pitch built around native yield.

The lesson is a hard one for blockchain infrastructure. A popular brand and appealing apps can bring people in, but they don't guarantee enough sustainable fee revenue to cover the cost of running a chain.
