Lisbon NFC Summit Turns an Old Factory Into a Showcase for Digital Art

NFC Summit, Lisbon's annual digital art and Web3 festival, opened its fifth edition on June 4, 2026, at Unicorn Factory Lisboa, a former army food complex in the Beato district. For the first time art was the event's backbone, with four floors of exhibitions in an old flour mill plus container galleries and a plaza installation by Dmitri Cherniak. Organizers later said 2,700 people attended.

On June 4, 2026, Lisbon's NFC Summit opened a three-day gathering devoted to digital art and Web3 culture in an unusual setting: Unicorn Factory Lisboa, a former industrial complex in the city's Beato district. Across four floors of an old flour mill, outdoor spaces and converted shipping containers, the event made the case that digital art can be experienced at architectural scale, not just as a thumbnail in a crypto wallet.

A new home for the fifth edition

This was the summit's fifth year, and the first time all of its events were housed on one site, according to Right Click Save. The complex was three to four times the size of the festival's previous Lisbon venue, and Visit Lisboa described 2026 as the first year art formed the event's main structure.

The buildings have a long industrial past. The site in Beato was established in 1897 as the Manutenção Militar, which produced food for the Portuguese Army, with mills, bakeries and biscuit and pasta factories. Lisbon later converted it into a hub for startups. The summit's NFC Art Factory filled the four storeys of the old Fábrica de Moagem, the flour mill, with some of its original machinery still in place.

Founder John Karp said the move was meant to change how the event is seen. Until now, he told Right Click Save in May 2026, "the crypto world was seeing us as an art event, and the art world was seeing us as a crypto event." He said the aim was to "try to create bridges between universes."

From the Grand Hall to the AI Cave

The summit's Day 1 wrap-up walked visitors from the Grand Hall down to an AI Cave in the basement. The top floor hosted "SYSTEMS," an exhibition drawn from the digital art collection of Arab Bank Switzerland, the event's main partner, curated by Nina Roehrs. It included work by Larva Labs, Helena Sarin, Jack Butcher and Kim Asendorf, plus the three finalists for the bank's Digital Art Prize.

Ground-floor galleries included ETERNO, showing Vhils and BOLDTRON, and DANAE, presenting Eko33's "Calculated Skies." The basement section focused on AI and machines. Fanny Lakoubay, co-founder of 100 Collectors, curated the conference's own exhibitions.

Outside, a central plaza was anchored by a large LED triptych from generative artist Dmitri Cherniak, with a generative system running continuously. Four freight-container galleries held presentations including OpenSea-supported solo shows, among them new work from Efdot's GLiFS project, which was minting on OpenSea. A mural by MASNAH reproduced XCOPY's "The Doomed" near the plaza.

Many kinds of digital art under one roof

The program brought together strands that are often lumped under the label NFT. Generative works use algorithms and rules to produce images. Other projects rely on artificial intelligence, interactive systems, video or meticulous hand-built digital craft. Some are sold as blockchain tokens; others show digital-art culture without putting a token at the center of the visitor's experience. The Digital Art Prize itself no longer required entries to be minted as NFTs, Right Click Save reported.

The industrial rooms became part of the show. Big, irregular spaces and old machinery created a different mood from a white-walled gallery, encouraging visitors to see moving images and computational art as installations rather than collectible files. Talks put artists, collectors and curators on stage together, and the summit's art catalogue listed dozens of projects. The festival also kept a foot in finance, opening its second day with a Stablecoin Day, a reminder of how much of crypto now runs on stablecoins.

Satellite shows spread into the city. ETERNO's gallery in Marvila opened "Unpermissioned Self / Proof of Being" on June 5, featuring artists including Justin Aversano, Coldie and Pindar Van Arman. Aversano's foundation later launched a $50,000 digital art initiative across all 50 US states.

A more mature way to present NFTs

During the first NFT boom, publicity centered on big sales and cartoon profile pictures. NFC Summit offered a wider frame focused on artistic practice and presentation. An exhibition's value doesn't depend on whether every work is tokenized or later rises in price.

The event also showed why physical shows matter even for a digital medium. People can see a work's scale, notice details that are hard to see on a phone and meet the people behind it. An NFT may record an edition or its provenance, but a shared art experience is still a human event. Museums have reached a similar conclusion, from MoMA's collection of CryptoPunks and Chromie Squiggles to Mexico City's Anahuacalli, which staged its own digital art program two months later.

The summit closed with 2,700 attendees, organizers said in a press release, and said a sixth edition would be announced soon. For the crypto industry, the takeaway was simple: the most memorable image from a digital art gathering may be a glowing installation inside a 19th-century factory complex, not a trading screen.
