Nexon's MapleStory franchise entered a new technical chapter on May 15, 2025, when NEXPACE, a Web3 company backed by Nexon, launched MapleStory N, a blockchain-powered MMORPG, together with the NXPC token used across its wider MapleStory Universe project. It was one of the most prominent attempts by an established game company to bring onchain items into a game world millions of players already knew.
Historical news event: 2025-05-15. Retrospective report prepared November 2026.
A classic world with a new layer
The look stayed unmistakably MapleStory: colorful 2D characters, bright fantasy landscapes and playful combat animations. NEXPACE's launch announcement described the game as blending "the nostalgic 2D visuals and classic gameplay" of the 23-year-old series with NFTs, onchain item mechanics and open marketplaces. Rather than replacing that identity with a crypto interface, MapleStory N added an asset and marketplace layer behind a familiar style of multiplayer progression.
The game launched on PC. Players complete quests and battle monsters as in the original, while earning, crafting and trading assets that the company said can hold real-world value. NEXPACE, which is based in Abu Dhabi, presented the project as an expansion of an existing IP rather than an unrelated token venture.
How ownership works in MapleStory N
MapleStory N runs on a custom layer-1 blockchain built with Avalanche technology and powered by AvaCloud, according to the release; later reporting refers to this chain as Henesys, after one of the game's best-known towns. Certain items and achievements are represented by onchain assets, and the NXPC token ties the ecosystem together.
The key mechanic is what NEXPACE calls Fusion-Fission. Players can redeem NXPC for collections of NFTs (Fission) and exchange those collections back into NXPC (Fusion). The company said the design creates a self-balancing system that curbs oversupply. NXPC also funds rewards for builders and creators who make content through what the project calls Synergy Apps.
"MSU addresses long-standing issues in traditional gaming like item inflation and developer-controlled ecosystems, by giving real ownership to players," NEXPACE CEO Sunyoung Hwang said in the launch announcement. "The launch of MapleStory N and the NXPC marks a major evolution in how games are played and valued," Hwang added.

For an ordinary player, the big question is what changes when an item can be recorded and traded outside a single game's private database. Supporters say it enables open markets and player-led economies. But an NFT doesn't guarantee an item stays useful forever, or that its holder owns the art or game mechanics behind it. Servers, balance changes and publisher decisions still matter.
A loud token debut
Demand was visible before launch. NEXPACE said an OpenSea primary drop campaign from May 6 to 12 saw more than 1 million mints, and that it pushed Avalanche to its highest number of unique active wallets since the campaign began. NXPC debuted on seven exchanges: Bitget, Bithumb, Binance, Bybit, Gate.io, KuCoin and Upbit, after appearing on Binance Alpha on May 13, BlockchainGamer.biz reported.
On launch day, Decrypt reported that NXPC traded as high as $3.84 with more than $2 billion in trading volume. Those were early figures for a newly listed token and say nothing about the game's long-term health. Token incentives may reward early activity, but they're separate from gameplay quality and shouldn't be mistaken for a guaranteed return, a lesson that runs back to the earliest game-based cryptocurrencies.
What happened after launch
MapleStory N kept running and kept changing. By its third-quarter 2025 report, NEXPACE counted 1.75 million lifetime accounts and around 70,000 daily active wallets on its chain, BlockchainGamer.biz reported. The same report showed the strain of an open economy: the company said it banned 640,000 accounts, about 37% of the lifetime total, for botting. NXPC had fallen to about $0.35 by late October 2025.
NEXPACE responded with a $50 million ecosystem fund in November 2025, quarterly NXPC token burns and tighter identity checks. In January 2026, the game ran a month-long collaboration with Pudgy Penguins, the cartoon brand that had launched its own PENGU token a year earlier. These figures are company-reported, but they show a game that was still operating, and still adjusting, well after its launch.
A high-profile test for Web3 gaming
Blockchain games have often struggled to win over traditional gamers wary of wallet setup, token speculation or awkward mechanics. MapleStory N approached the problem with a far stronger brand than most Web3 startups could afford, a contrast with smaller studios and a parallel to other big publishers' experiments, such as Ubisoft's Quartz NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint and WEMADE's Legend of YMIR.
That advantage brings its own standard of accountability. Fans expect stable servers, content updates and a satisfying RPG, and blockchain features have to improve those basics rather than get in the way. Adding onchain items is a technical milestone. Whether it improves a game economy over the long run takes evidence from active players and a sustained operating record, the same test early boosters set when they predicted how blockchain would change gaming.
