# OpenSea Unveils OS2 Beta, Combining NFTs and Tokens Across Chains

> On February 13, 2025, OpenSea released OS2, a ground-up rebuild that put NFTs and fungible tokens in one multi-chain marketplace, alongside an XP rewards program. The same day, the OpenSea Foundation said a SEA token was on the way. It marked the best-known NFT marketplace's shift toward trading all kinds of onchain assets.

[OpenSea](https://opensea.io) unveiled OS2 on February 13, 2025, a rebuilt version of its marketplace that put NFTs and fungible crypto tokens on one platform across multiple blockchains. The company called it "the most significant evolution in OpenSea's history" in its [launch post](https://opensea.io/blog/articles/introducing-os2), and opened it to users as a public beta. On the same day, the OpenSea Foundation said a SEA token was coming.

The launch followed about a year of rebuilding. OpenSea said it had decided to rebuild "everything from the ground up", including its technology and its team, after losing ground to rivals during the NFT downturn.

## One interface for many onchain assets

OpenSea made its name trading unique digital items, from art to profile-picture collections. Crypto exchanges, by contrast, focus on fungible tokens that can be swapped in any amount. People active in games, art and online communities often hold both, and until OS2 they usually needed different sites to trade them.

OS2 tried to close that gap. According to OpenSea, the beta included:

- Token swaps through third-party liquidity aggregators that source prices from decentralised exchanges.
- Cross-chain purchasing, so a user could, for example, spend ETH to buy an NFT on another supported chain without bridging manually.
- Aggregated listings from other marketplaces, to help users find the best price.
- New chains, starting with Flow, ApeChain, Berachain and Soneium.
- Redesigned search, a traits tab, colour-coded rarity, live stats and a wallet sidebar.
- Lower fees at launch.

"It's sort of a reimagining of every surface of OpenSea," co-founder and CEO Devin Finzer told [Decrypt](https://decrypt.co/305709/opensea-token-airdrop-ethereum-nft-marketplace) on launch day. He said the main change was "expanding from just being an NFT marketplace to really a broader platform for trading all sorts of things."

Cross-chain features hide complexity rather than removing it. Each network still has its own fees and security assumptions, and swaps route through outside services.

## XP rewards and the SEA token

OS2 also introduced XP, a points system for active users. In its first wave, people earned XP for things like keeping listings active and placing collection offers on eligible NFTs.

The bigger news for many users was SEA. OpenSea said the OpenSea Foundation would launch the token, which holders would be able to use on OS2, and that it would also recognise long-time users. No date was given. Finzer told Decrypt the token only made sense with a strong product behind it.

"In the bull market, we became far too Web2," Finzer told Decrypt, describing why the company had cut back to a smaller, crypto-focused team before the relaunch.

## Why OpenSea changed course

By 2025, OpenSea's position had shifted. Rivals such as LooksRare, which [launched in 2022 with token rewards aimed at OpenSea's traders](/2022/01/10/looksrare-challenges-opensea-with-a-token-reward-model-for-nft-traders/), and later Blur had pulled away volume by offering incentives and lower fees. NFT trading overall was far below its 2021 peak.

OS2 was in part an admission that a marketplace built only around collectible images had a smaller future. The rebuild kept the underlying [Seaport trading protocol OpenSea adopted in 2022](/2022/06/14/opensea-moves-nft-trading-to-seaport-to-cut-costs-and-add-flexibility/), but wrapped it in a broader product. Collections still mattered, especially recognisable character brands, but the company was betting that its users would also trade tokens and move across chains.

Regulatory pressure also eased soon after. OpenSea had received a Wells notice from the US Securities and Exchange Commission in 2024, and about a week after the OS2 launch, Finzer said the agency had closed its investigation.

## Beta first, full rollout later

OS2 wasn't finished on February 13. OpenSea kept testing and adding features for several months. On May 29, 2025, it [announced that OS2 was out of beta](https://opensea.io/blog/articles/opensea-announces-os2-is-now-out-of-beta-token-trading-fully-live-across-19-chains-new-rewards-program-launches-and-community-hub-revamped) and had replaced the legacy site, with token trading across 19 chains, including Solana tokens, and a quest-based rewards system called Voyages.

Separating the two dates matters. February introduced the direction and an early product. May marked the full public release.

SEA took longer. OpenSea later set a first-quarter 2026 launch, then in March 2026 Finzer said the token would be delayed with no new date, citing difficult market conditions, [The Block reported](https://www.theblock.co/post/393824/opensea-delays-sea-token-launch-offers-no-new-date). As of this report, SEA hasn't launched.
